Shapes

A lot of the food that is acceptable is uniform in shape.  I think it is pleasing to a small person who loves consistency and patterns.  Careful cutting and peeling is helpful and imperfections on fruit (e.g. bruising) aren't tolerated.

Segregating Food

Small plates or bowls positioned on large plates, or just really large plates help keep different foods separated.  You can buy special plates that are sectioned.

Crockery

Plates and bowls that are pleasing colours can be an incentive for eating.  My children like to pick a colour for their porridge in the morning.  Colour's a happy distraction.

Pasta bowls are shallow and wide, great for bowl-food that needs to be cooled for hungry eaters.  The lip of these bowls means that it is easier to draw the food on to the utensil as using utensils can be a tricky fine motor skill to master.
